Could it already be three?

This past Friday Handsome and I celebrated 3 years of dating. It is surreal to think it has already been three years since he asked me to be his girlfriend. It’s even crazier to think that it has been six years since we met and I was smitten.

We were so excited to celebrate three years and were equally happy to have the special day land on a Friday. It ended up being hotter than the Sahara a bit uncomfortable when temperatures reached 103 degrees. Let me let you know, that doesn’t happen in Chicago. Hot is 80 degrees, Heat wave is 90 degrees, 103 degrees is unheard of.

004 I wasn’t kidding, I made sure to have proof. I’ve been known to exaggerate on occasion, this was not one of those days.

We headed downtown in the muggy weather to The Capital Grille Restaurant, essentially a steak house with an infinite amount of wine, Honey I’m home.

As soon as we were seated in our nice air conditioned booth it began to down pour outside in what would develop into flooding of trains and entire expressways, The Chicago Monsoon of 2010.

When I made the reservation they asked if we were celebrating anything. I explained I’d been dating Handsome for three years, but the message must have been confused. When we sat down our table had a birthday card waiting for us. Our waiter asked us whose birthday we were celebrating so we clarified with him. He still brought us cheesecake with a birthday candle and champagne for after dinner. Do you still make a wish? I did.

On our way out  I had to grab a picture with these adorable lions, they reminded me of the ones on Michigan Avenue, but more Katie size.

008We walked around downtown and by the Chicago river, I honestly don’t think I’ve ever walked on the river walk before, and I’ve lived here my whole life. No time like the presence right?

009Wait, you wanted a close up?

010After this we walked up to upper Wacker where they’ve been filming Transformers 3 starring my former boyfriend one time big crush Shia LaBeouf. (Read myspace messaged him to suggest a date for my 20th birthday and was jilted with no response, his loss. Whatev.)

Anyway, Handsome thought it would be funny to tell me that one of the crew workers who resembled Shia, was actually Shia and I was frozen to the sidewalk for about five minutes. It took him that long to convince me it was a joke and Shia would not wear a crew shirt and a walkie talkie.

There were still tons of debris from the movie set and the crazy thing was it is all made out of foam. Huge rock boulders, telephone poles, it looks like Chicago had a crazy foam asteroid shower.

011Foam madness, I tell you.

012 My other half wanted no part of this photo shoot, I got a little into it, mind you.

013 Holy Muscles! I’m lifting the boulders at this point. Don’t they look real?

014A southern couple offered to take a photo of us. I heart Southerners, so friendly. The husband lifted the caution tape for a close up and a female police officer yelled at us, “Why would that ever be a good idea?”

Uh. I ask Why Not? I’d have taken her photo next if she wanted, but no can do.

My favorite crazy foam photo:

After this we headed back for a nice restful night. The next day we drove around Oak Park and were shocked to see one of the L trains was literally closed along with the highway. It had apparently monsooned so hard the night before that traffic and public transit was halted in some areas.

I’m not nearly as observant as Handsome so when I pointed out the new river where the L used to be, I was quite proud.

019Oh and as for gifts? We kept it at a $10 spending limit to really stretch our imaginations and see what we could come up with. I didn’t take pictures unfortunately, I should later.

Handsome got me a wonderful recipe box from Crate and Barrel with a plastic protector slide to put my recipes in. He knew whenever I bake the recipes end up in the garbage because they’re covered in batter and the like by the end. So thoughtful.

I bought him a 2.5 feet by 3.5 feet vintage 1960’s map on ebay. I then glued it to a cork board and used push pins to mark all of the places we’ve been thus far together. I thought it would be a fun way to keep track of where we’d traveled and a great way to mark future trips too.

So that was my weekend of celebration for the most part. We were really low key last night by enjoying the night with Bob’s family and some pizza. Tonight was finished off with church and dinner with my family. I absolutely love going to church with Bob, it makes me feel so connected to God and His plan.

After 6 years of adoration and 3 years of officially being together, I am so happy to call Handsome mine. With that said I’d pick him over Shia any day.
