Prayers for Papa

I've been a bit MIA this week. My grandfather, or Papa, as I affectionately call him is ill. He is 91 and suffered a stroke and a small heart attack. He's been in the hospital and is currently in the intensive care unit. He contracted pneumonia, but has been fighting it as hard as he can.

He is the kind of man that never gets sick and keeps going, no matter what life throws at you. He is 100% Italian, Sicilian, rather. He is as stubborn as he is loving and treasures his family and his wife more than anything.

I'm the oldest grandchild, followed by my cousin Jamie. Jame and I were always at our Nana and Papas house having adventures, it was more fun than any vacation could be. Papa would make me the best popcorn I've ever tasted every night, and Jamie would have a chocolate milk and a sundae for her night cap.

I haven't been to my parents to dig through boxes of old pictures so there are the only two I have right now, but they're great. I've gone and visited my Papa twice, and though he didn't remember the first visit it was so sweet.

As a little girl my papa would always sing a very old song to me:

K-K-K-Katie, beautiful Katie,
You're the only g-g-g-girl that I adore;
When the m-m-m-moon shines,
Over the c-c-c-cowshed,
I'll be waiting at the k-k-k-kitchen door.

When I saw him in the hospital I sang this to him and he started humming along and grabbed my hand, it was such a sweet moment. He hated his pureed food, rightfully so, so I seasoned it as much as possible and fed it to him. He kept complaining that he wanted fried peppers, and spaghetti and meat balls. I told him once he eats this and gets stronger I'll make that for him.

If you could keep him in your prayers, I know my whole family would appreciate it!

  1. Oh Katie...what a sweet man! I love the special moments that you shared in this post. Praying for him and your family right NOW!

  2. My grandpa used to sing that song to me too! Hope he is doing better.
